The main opposition DP official claimed that the head of state issued the decree on mayoral elections without an enforceable decision on validity of the mandate of Himara Mayor-elect in place.

“Today’s theatre play coordinated between (Prime Minister) Edi Rama and a general turned into soldier is an attempt on the rule of law, showing political elimination of the institution of the President of the Republic. Today’s decision by the Central Election Commission has yet to become enforceable, because of the appeal deadline. The President of the Republic Bajram Begaj is making a grave mistake by thinking that he would overcome his moral integrity issues stemming from previous state assignments by acting like an ordinary subordinate of Edi Rama,” Bardhi said.

President Begaj set August 4, 2024 as the date for local elections in Himara earlier today after the Central Election Commission (CEC) nullified Fredi Beleri’s mayoral mandate in the southern Albanian municipality after being sentenced to two years in prison on vote-buying charges.
