The project is supported by the German state-owned development bank KfW, and is part of the EU initiative to build an East to West electricity transmission corridor between Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Italy.

OST signed in April the contract with the wining company for construction the construction of 400 kV substation Elbasan 3, as well as expansion of Fier substation, whereas another contract has been signed earlier on construction of the 400 kV line between Elbasan and Qafë-Thanë.

This important project will strengthen the interconnection with the regional electricity network, creating a more secure and reliable system, as well as the right conditions for unlimited power exchanges and transits in the region.

This investment will also impact development of the 400kV network in ​​Southern Albania and it will meet the investment demands for development of renewable energy, as well as the country’s economic and tourism development.

The investment funded by the German state-owned development bank KfW, Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) and Albania’s power transmission system operator OST, includes construction of new a high-voltage 400kV interconnection line from Elbasan to Qafe Thane (Albania-North Macedonia), construction of 400 kV transmission line between Elbasan and Fier, construction of 400 kV substation Elbasan 3, as well as upgrading power substation in Fier.

Power transmission system operator announced it has signed the contract with wining company for the part of project, entailing construction of 400 kV substation Elbasan 3 and expansion of substation in Fier, while a contract on construction of 400 kV transmission line between Elbasan and Qafe-Thane has been signed earlier.

The project is important in terms of integrating regional systems of electricity, increasing energy security, creating a safe and reliable system, as well as the proper conditions for unlimited energy trade in the region.

The project also creates new energy opportunities and development of the 400kV network for the south of Albania and it is part of the planned investments in developing renewable energy.
