TIRANA, Sept. 18 /ATA/ – Solar photovoltaic plants covered around 30% of Albania’s electricity consumption in June, highlighting the growing role of solar power in strengthening energy security, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Enea Karakaçi said on Friday.

Photovoltaic plants generated 868 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity through the end of August, Karakaçi said.

He said the diversification of power sources was increasing domestic generation and strengthening the stability of the electricity system.

“Thirty percent of the energy consumed in June was produced by photovoltaic plants,” Karakaçi said, adding that solar generation had become particularly important during the summer, when drought reduces water levels in the Drin river cascade and limits hydropower production.

Karakaçi said the expansion of solar generation was supporting Albania’s goal of greater energy independence by 2030 by increasing domestic production and diversifying energy sources.

TIRANA, May 23 /ATA/ – Albania’s net electricity production fell by around 9.8% to 2.234 GWh in the first quarter of 2025 from 2.478 GWh during the same period of a year earlier, the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) said on Friday.

According to official data, the power available on the market increased by 3.2% year-on-year in the first quarter of the year, increasing the level of supply to consumers.

The drop in the country’s power output is mainly credited to the fall in electricity generation from the public hydropower stations, which accounted for 45.8% of the total net power production.

Official data show that electricity production from the public hydropower stations fell 11.9% to 1.023 GWh in the first quarter of 2025, down from 1.162 GWh in the same period of the previous year.

The privately-held hydropower plants contributed by 46.3%, while the rest was generated by other electricity producers.

In a bid to make up for the domestic net production and meet the domestic demand, electricity imports have significantly increased. Albania’s gross electricity imports edged up by 43.4% to 767 GWh in the first three months of 2025 from 535 GWh a year earlier from 2.253 GWh in 2021, recording a 35.1% year-on-year increase.

On the other hand, Albania’s gross electricity exports have declined 10.1% year-on-year to 732 GWh, from 814 GWh in the first quarter of 2024.
