TIRANA, Sept 26 /ATA/ – The reconstruction programme launched by the government of Albania in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that hit the country on November 26, 2019, killing 51 people and injuring over 1000 people, is full steam ahead with new homes, schools, residential areas being built every day in the worst affected areas.

Construction work is underway in all quake-hit areas, where new buildings, residential neighborhoods, educational facilities and public infrastructure are being built from scratch for more than 42,000 families.

The state budget funding earmarked for the post-earthquake recovery and reconstruction programme is estimated over 60 billion lek.

In the meantime, 100% of the grants as part of pledges at the International Donors Conference, or around 300 million euros is allocated to support more than 30 concrete housing, education and public infrastructure projects.

Over 33,4000 households have received government compensation grants totalling 12.7 billion lek to support reconstruction, in addition to rebuilding communal premises in more than 1100 apartment buildings. A total of 13,325 quake-affected families have benefited monthly rental bonus and they are entitled to receive this payment until they move into their new homes.

Construction of 27 new schools has already completed, while work is in full swing to build more educational facilities, residential buildings and public infrastructure to the benefit of more than 500,000 residents.

A total of 450 private companies and over 24,000 employees are working in around 3100 construction sites, where new buildings, incomparable to those destroyed by the earthquake, are increasingly taking their final shape.

No traces of the devastating earthquake will be found by end of spring 2022.

Construction of a total of 4500 new single-family homes is set complete by spring, ultimately providing housing to all families that lost their houses in the earthquake, whereas 13,000 households will continue receiving the rental bonus until keys to their new homes are handed over to them.

As many as 12,000 new apartments will be built in the new residential complexes, providing housing to all families that lost their apartments. Likewise, 28 new construction sites of public infrastructure will complete by next spring.

The new schools are being built back stronger, more resilient and more spacious to meet contemporary standards for habitability and environmental comfort and provide spaces for contemporary education and become a model of the ongoing transformation. Construction and rehabilitation of more than 160 kindergartens, schools, dormitories and other educational facilities is also slated to complete within next spring.
