TIRANA, Aug 18 /ATA/ – Expansion of the loan portfolio of Albania’s banking system has been supported almost equally both by Lek and foreign currency-denominated lending.

The Bank of Albania announced Wednesday that Lek-denominated loan portfolio rose 11% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2021, whereas the foreign currency-denominated loan increased by 4.5%.

The expansion of lending activity in the national currency was supported by the central bank’s accommodative monetary policy, as well as a more prudent approach to the exchange rate – especially related to household lending.

The Lek-denominated loans keep accounting for the largest share of the total loan portfolio by 50.1% in June.

Central bank said that lending to the private sector has maintained an upward trend in the second quarter of the year, with the annual growth rate of the loan portfolio estimated at 7.7%, slightly higher than the first quarter 2021.

TIRANA, May 13 /ATA/ – The portfolio of government securities rose 17.2 year-on-year in March to around 19 billion lek since start of this year, the Bank of Albania said.

According to central bank, the commercial banks seized the opportunity to invest in government lek and euro-denominated debt securities, including the Eurobond, during 2020.

The trend has continued in the first quarter of 2021, with the sector responding to a slightly higher demand of the Albanian government for domestic borrowing compared to the two previous quarters.

However, the increase in the securities portfolio is not attributed to the government issues only, but also to the increase in the volume of investment in securities from other issuers, especially in the euro-denominated bills.
