TIRANA, Feb 6 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Saturday that agricultural land area under irrigation has doubled to over 240.000 hectares from around 120.000 hectares just few years ago.

In his remarks at a conversation with local residents in the city of Gjirokaster, the government head also noted that the area of arable land in crop production in Albania has also doubled thanks to the new irrigation system projects.

“The area of the cultivate land has also doubled in Albania thanks to the new irrigation systems built over the past years, because many land areas were not arable as people had abandoned the land due to the lack of irrigation water. However, this doesn’t mean our work is now over,” PM Rama said.

“It is impossible to draw any comparison between the state of the country’s agriculture sector just seven years ago and the sector’s situation today as the exponential growth in agricultural exports speaks for itself. This is also shown through your and many others’ example, which are not examples created by us, and you are not a product of the government and its work,” Rama said.

PM Rama pledged that the government will continue to support more projects on construction of irrigation and drainage systems, water supply networks, and sewerage and wastewater systems.

“It was a whole irrigation and drainage system that was destroyed in the’90s and totally abandoned in the ensuing years. We have opened main drainage systems over the past years,” he said.

“We actually inherit a very good water reservoirs system from the past, for the sake of truth,” Rama said.
