TIRANA, July 9 /ATA/ Farmers throughout the country are expanding the land plots planted with medicinal and aromatic herbs, whose exports generate higher economic income.

Prime Minister Edi Rama on Sunday shared images of over 150 hectares of plots planted with lavender in Kushovo, Gramsh.
According to ARDA, through financial support from the National Agriculture Scheme and the IPARD II program, the area planted with medicinal and aromatic plants has increased to 2080 ha in recent years.
ARDA informs that the growing demand of foreign markets for these plants, which provide even greater profits for farming families, has encouraged them to engage in this activity.

Albania is home to over 7,000 species of plants, which account for almost 32% of the entire flora of Europe. In 2022, Albania has exported over 15,000 tons of medicinal and aromatic plants, worth over 50 million euros.

The most important export products are sage, oregano, thyme, lavender, etc. Albania has seen a small but growing flow of essential oil exports, as well as an increase in processing capacity in the country.

The production base consists mainly of wild AMPs that grow throughout the country.

The rich biodiversity in Albania represents an important potential for the development of the MAP sector. More than 400 species have been identified as MAP of the Albanian flora, of which more than 200 species are collected and traded.
MAPs are an important sector of the rural economy. Surveys show that, in some rural areas, almost all households receive a significant portion of their income from the collection of MAPs.
