TIRANA, August 4 /ATA/ – As of August 1, Albania has introduced a standardized medical prescription format across the entire healthcare system, both public and private. The new system aims to increase transparency, reduce pharmaceutical lobbying, and improve patient care.

According to the President of the Albanian Medical Order, Dr. Dritan Trepçe, the unified prescription helps prevent undue influence from pharmaceutical companies in how doctors issue prescriptions.

“Since the COVID-19 period, we’ve seen companies providing branded prescription pads, which raises legitimate concerns about potential collusion between doctors and pharmacists,” Trepçe said in a televised interview. “The new format eliminates such doubts and streamlines the prescription process.”

The new system allows physicians to issue prescriptions for chronic patients for up to six months, eliminating the need for frequent in-person visits. Pharmacists are also permitted to partially fill prescriptions when certain medications are unavailable, provided they record and stamp the issued quantities.

Violations of the new format will result in penalties for pharmacists.

The updated prescription includes several technical features: the generic name of the drug, the prescription type (acute or chronic), and the pharmacist’s name and stamp – all designed to enhance safety and reduce bureaucracy.

Health authorities say the reform marks a major step forward in improving quality, safety, and efficiency for both patients and healthcare professionals.
