TIRANA, Sept 16 /ATA/ – The 80th anniversary of the Conference of Peza, a WWII anti-fascist event, was commemorated with a ceremony that took place in the village of Peza, Tirana, on Friday.

The Minister of Defence Niko Peleshi and the Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces Manushaqe Shehu attended the event marking the event.

In his remarks, the Defence Minister praised the war veterans’ role in preserving this historical date and the messages of the Conference of Peza to the younger generations.

“Just like in the Lezha League or in the Albanian Prizren League, the Conference of Peze in this village on September 16, 1942, the national instinct brought all Albanians together in the face of a serious threat of the fascist occupation,” Peleshi said.

Defence Minister said that Albania was on the right side of history and it provides the country today with the moral right to proudly knock on the door of the European Union.

He said that it is Albania’s mission to maintain Western orientation of the Western Balkans.

“Albania is a decent member of the world’s most powerful military alliance, NATO. This makes us feel safe and protected, yet it doesn’t totally eliminate risks and threats, like the most recent cyberattacks. The world has changed and the security arena has also changed following the unjustified Russian aggression on Ukraine. Geopolitics has changed and we lie right at the heart of a very fragile region like the Western Balkan. But Albania is oriented towards the West and we have a mission to accomplish in all Albanian-speaking territories to keep the Balkans oriented towards the West,” Peleshi stated.

Local government officials, members of the Veterans Committee, as well as local residents attended the event.
