TIRANA, Sept 4 /ATA/ – Over 5.5 tonnes of peaches originating from Albania were destroyed in Croatia after border tests found high levels for nickel, Albania’s National Food Authority (AKU) confirmed on Thursday.

The incident was first reported on August 21 by Croatian authorities through the EU’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). The shipment, totaling 5,565 kg, was halted at the border and flagged under the classification “Border Rejection Notification” (Ref. No. 2025.6367).

In a press statement, food safety watchdog said it immediately launched an inspection of the exporting company based in Fier, southwestern Albania. The inspection confirmed that the product had been fully exported and had not entered the domestic market.

“The exporter maintains a traceability system, and verification showed that the peaches were not distributed within Albania. The entire shipment was destroyed in Croatia following lab analysis,” the Agency said.

The case has been referred to the National Authority for Veterinary and Plant Protection (AKVMB) for further investigation and legal follow-up, AKU added.

Authorities said they have updated the relevant RASFF notifications and are continuing to cooperate with European partners to safeguard food chain safety.
