TIRANA – On 12th of September 2022, the Embassy of Japan in Albania and Permet Municipality signed a Grant Agreement for the provision of a new Waste Collection Truck and 24 Waste Containers to Permet Municipality. The Grant, amounting to EUR 78,000, is provided through Japan’s Grant scheme “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects” with the aim to improve and increase the coverage of the Municipality’s provided service, decrease of uncontrolled dumping of waste and provide a safer work environment for the employees. This grant contract was signed by H.E. Mr. TAKADA Mitsuyuki, Ambassador of Japan to Albania and Ms. Alma HOXHA, Mayor of Permet Municipality.

At the Signing Ceremony, which took place at the premises of the Embassy, Ambassador TAKADA underlined the importance of collaboration among governmental bodies, citizens, civil society organizations, and donors in improving the waste management cycle in the country and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Albania. He added that besides building a solid infrastructure, the attitude of each individual towards waste generation and disposal is of crucial importance explaining that in Japan waste management starts from each household. At the same time, Mayor HOXHA was filled with gratitude for the Ambassador and the Government of Japan, underlining the Project’s importance to the Municipality and its citizen. The Mayor expressed her commitment to improving waste management in Permet.

Japan has continuously supported Albania with several grants for equipment and vehicles provision and technical cooperation projects. Environment is one of Japan’s priority areas for the official development assistance (ODA) provided to Albania. Ever since the establishment of the Embassy of Japan in Albania in 2017, 11 waste management related projects with a total value of 870,000 Euro, have been awarded in the framework of the GGP scheme to different Municipalities of Albania. Additionally, in 2017, Japan has offered its expertise in 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) waste management system to Albania through a technical cooperation project implemented by JICA during 2014 – 2017, for the Support of Waste Minimization and 3R Promotion in Albania.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of friendly relations between Japan and Albania and the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Embassy of Japan in Albania. Japan will continue to support Albania in this sector and other ones as well.
