TIRANA, April 8 /ATA/ Minister of Health and Social Protection, Albana Koçi, shared images of the newly renovated facilities at the pediatric specialty department of the “Mother Teresa University Hospital Center.” In addition to the new building, another significant investment is the genetics laboratory service, which focuses on the early detection of diagnoses in young patients.

“Investments in healthcare are more meaningful when they impact the most vulnerable lives, where the heart beats the hardest: in our children,” writes Koçi.

Meanwhile, Anila Babameto, the head of the genetics laboratory service at the Pediatrics Department of the Mother Teresa University Hospital Center (QSUNT), says that the laboratory activity consists of three labs: standard cytogenetics, numerical cytogenetics, and structural cytogenetics.
“We perform karyotyping analysis for chromosomal abnormalities, both numerical and structural, in order to diagnose these abnormalities. Another important laboratory we’ve built in recent years is the molecular biology laboratory. In this lab, we diagnose the most common molecular diseases in the Albanian population, such as beta thalassemia and sickle cell anemia, as well as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, and the diagnosis of several rare genomic syndromes,” says Babameto.

Furthermore, the video posted on social media features messages from parents or relatives of children receiving care at the pediatric specialties department of QSUNT. They praise the exceptional conditions, including the cleanliness and the dedication of the medical staff.
