TIRANA, June 21 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama on Sunday reiterated that ethnic Albanians in North Macedonia are not part of Albania’s diaspora but a state-forming people in their own country, responding to a critical social media post by a citizen from Tetovo.

In a statement published online, Rama addressed the involvement of some Albanians from North Macedonia in Albania’s domestic political debates, arguing that they should not be portrayed as members of Albania’s diaspora.

“Albanians in North Macedonia are not Albania’s diaspora on foreign soil. Together with Macedonians, they are a state-forming people in their own country, our neighbouring state,” Rama said.

He added that the term diaspora applies to emigrants living abroad, not to Albanians in North Macedonia or in Kosovo, which he described as an independent state.

Rama criticized what he called the political mobilization of supporters from Prishtina and Tetovo at opposition events in Tirana, saying such actions risk damaging the image of Albanians in North Macedonia and Kosovo.

He also accused the organizers of using national symbols for partisan purposes and said those backing such initiatives were undermining, rather than advancing, Albanian interests.

The Prime Minister further condemned the use of symbols associated with the former Kosovo Liberation Army in anti-government demonstrations.

“I will never forget the desecration of the KLA’s liberation flag by turning it into a banner of hatred aimed at toppling the government in Tirana,” Rama said. “It is a gift to those who do not recognize Kosovo and to those who have long questioned the Albanians’ ability to build and sustain a state.”

Rama’s remarks came amid ongoing political tensions and public debate over the participation of ethnic Albanians from neighbouring countries in Albania’s domestic political affairs.

TIRANA, June 17 /ATA/ – The “Prishtina 2026” Book Fair opened on Wednesday in Kosovo and will remain open to the public until June 21, bringing together publishers, authors and readers from Kosovo and the wider region.

Held under the motto “Books open the world”, the fair is organised by the Kosovo Publishers Association with support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Municipality of Prishtina.

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu said the event plays an important role in promoting reading culture.

“A child who reads carefully learns to follow thought to the end and distinguish truth. They learn to ask questions, compare, and not rush to conclusions. They learn that not every statement that sounds certain is true,” Haxhiu said. “A citizen who reads understands news, law, political promises, contracts, history, official documents and their own rights better.”

Now in its 26th edition, the fair is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and hosts 60 Albanian-language publishers presenting around 2,000 new titles. More than 40 events, including book launches and author appearances, are scheduled during the five-day event.

Organisers expect around 30,000 visitors, including students, school pupils, academics, writers and public figures from Kosovo’s cultural and political life.

Prishtina Mayor Përparim Rama said each book purchased was not only an investment in the individual but in a freer, more educated and stronger society.
