TIRANA, Oct 10 /ATA/ – Socialist lawmaker Etilda Gjonaj, part of the Albanian Parliament delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, voiced concern over the situation in Kosovo in the wake of criminal and military attack by a Serbian terrorist group against Kosovo police in the country’s north last month.

“At the PACE’s session several months ago, we had a discussion on dialogue and the need to deescalate tensions between Kosovo and Serbia, but the situation actually further escalated indeed. I urge all reasonable minds and coolheaded delegations here that we must free ourselves from the nationalism fever. Any situation that endangers the lives of citizens, the sovereignty of the territory, democracy and human rights are not in the interest of our people, it is not in the region’s interest and in Europe’s interest,” Gjonaj said.

“Fundamentalists are dangerous and pose a threat to democracy, freedom and society as we are seeing this in Kosovo, Ukraine and most recently in Israel. We cannot afford allowing another Crimea or a Donbas-like situation taking place in the north of Kosovo,” she stated.

“The Serbian citizens themselves do not wish something like this and we must free ourselves from nationalism. I would like to ask my Serbian colleagues, as politicians, as well as parents, whether they would like their children go through the horror of war. I am absolutely sure they don’t,” Albanian MP said.

Gjonaj urged the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to condemn the attack and call for a thorough investigation, telling every member nation that a similar attack would be the red line.
