TIRANA, July 23  /ATA/ Tensions were reported outside the Albanian Parliament this morning, as protesters clashed with State Police officers shortly before the start of the plenary session.

The demonstrators, who had gathered in front of the Parliament building, managed to remove part of the metal fence installed by police to secure the perimeter.

They later threw eggs, tomatoes, and bottles toward police officers, while the organizers also called on participants not to attack the blue uniforms.

During the protest, chants were heard including: “Cowardly MPs,” “Your time is up,” “Parliament of crime,” “Down with the government,” and “You do not represent us.” The protesters also called for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Media reports said that a police officer was injured during the confrontations.

The protesters attempted to block traffic at the intersection of Elbasan Road, stopping vehicles from getting through.

The State Police had put in place extensive security measures for the plenary session, surrounding the Parliament building with metal barriers across a wider perimeter than in previous protests, extending from Elbasan Road to the area near the Ministry of Interior.

A large number of police forces were deployed in the area, including the “Shqiponja” units, while water cannon vehicles were also stationed near Parliament and kept on standby in case the situation escalated.

As part of the security measures, entry into the restricted area was limited not only for citizens and vehicles, but also for the media workers.
