Parliament Speaker: Albania seeks to strengthen strategic partnership with United States

TIRANA, Oct. 5 /ATA/ – Parliament speaker Niko Peleshi met a U.S. congressional delegation led by Representative Vern Buchanan on Monday, with talks focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries and cooperation on regional security.

The meeting was also attended by U.S. Ambassador to Albania Eric Wendt.

Peleshi and the U.S. delegation discussed Albania’s progress towards European Union membership, including the need to advance reforms and strengthen democratic institutions, as well as the country’s role in NATO and regional security.

The talks also focused on expanding economic and business ties, with the aim of creating more opportunities for investment and partnerships between Albania and the United States.

The two sides also discussed parliamentary cooperation and the importance of constructive political dialogue in advancing reforms, increasing transparency and strengthening democratic institutions.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of the Albania-U.S. strategic partnership for regional security, Euro-Atlantic integration and Albania’s further development.

Parliament speaker meets EU ambassador, reaffirms Albania’s EU integration commitment

TIRANA, Sept. 9 /ATA/ – Parliament speaker Niko Peleshi met on Wednesday with the European Union’s new ambassador to Albania, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, to discuss the country’s EU integration process and the work ahead.

Parliament Speaker said EU membership is a natural aspiration of Albanians and reaffirmed Albania’s institutional commitment to advancing the process.

“EU membership is a natural aspiration of Albanians, and we are working with responsibility, commitment and institutional cooperation,” Peleshi said.

He said parliament would continue to contribute to the integration process through close cooperation with European institutions and the parliaments of EU member states.

Berisha slams appointment of Peleshi as Albanian Parliament Speaker, calls it ‘blow to Constitution’

TIRANA, Sept 12 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha strongly criticized the election of Niko Peleshi as the new Speaker of the Albanian Parliament on Friday, describing it as a blatant violation of the Constitution.

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament, the main opposition party leader claimed that the Constitution had been “trampled” by the ruling majority’s move.

“We consider this parliament absolutely illegitimate. Our battle will not stop until the day of our victory over it. This is the darkest day in the history of Albanian parliament. They have violated the Constitution with both feet,” Berisha said.

The 11th legislature of the Albanian Parliament officially opened today. A Temporary Commission was initially established to verify the mandates of all 140 elected MPs. Of those, 138 took the oath of office, as the two PSD elected lawmakers resigned their mandates.

Following the swearing-in, a secret ballot was held to elect the new Speaker, a process boycotted by the opposition. Niko Peleshi, the ruling Socialist Party’s nominee, was elected Speaker with 84 votes.
