TIRANA, Feb  21 /ATA/ The co-chairmen of the special parliamentary committee for EU accession process, Taulant Balla and Jorida Tabaku, held a meeting at the Seat of Parliament with representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Tirana.

The meeting focused on briefing for the changes to the law on the “Role of Parliament in the process of the European Union accession.”

The chairman of the SP parliamentary group Taulant Balla noted that parliament has an important role to play in the process of Albania’s EU accession with the opening of negotiations.”

“The changes to the law on the role of parliament in this process will be made from this perspective, as we will propose adding  to the Committee for European Affairs (currently the Committee for European Integration) another function to carry out, the review of the negotiating positions of the Government,” Balla said.

He informed that “the government will present to the Parliament the proposed negotiating position before determining/adopting the negotiating position for each chapter.”

According to Balla, “the Committee for European Affairs will give recommendations for the negotiating positions. This, according to him, is a real involvement of the Assembly, of course of the opposition either, in the negotiation process.

“Thank you to the honorable ambassadors Christiane Hohmann, Elsa Hastad, Reinout Vos, Christian Steiner, Peter Zingraf, Fabrizio Bucci, Konstantina Kamitsi, Peter Japelj, Elisabeth Barsacq, Ivaylo Kirov, Octavian Șerban, Zlatko Kramarić, deputy ambassador Ádám Lovassy for the insights we shared together. It is very important to assist the parliament with expertise throughout this process,” Balla said.
