TIRANA, Dec 19 /ATA/ – The main Democratic Party opposition lawmakers asked Albania’s Constitutional Court on Tuesday to invalidate several amendments to the Parliament’s rules of procedure adopted recently to prevent violence and other actions aimed at disrupting parliament’s sessions.

A group of 45 MPs filed a petition with the Constitutional Court demanding that the tougher disciplinary measures are overruled.

Under the new changes, MPs who break the rules will no longer face a 10-day suspension, but they could be expelled from parliament for a period from 30 to 60 days.

According to democrat MPs, the recent amendments approved by the ruling Socialist Party do not serve the interests of the public and that their only purpose is to silence the opposition.
