TIRANA, Feb 23 /ATA/ – Albania’s Constitutional Court has cancelled amendments increasing the number of parliamentary committees, upholding a petition filed by opposition Democratic Party lawmakers.

In a statement on Monday, the court said it had decided to strike down parliament’s Decision No. 57/2025, which amended the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly and raised the number of standing committees.

The court said changes to parliament’s rules were passed incorrectly as they breach the principle of representative democracy, linked to lawmakers’ freedom of expression.

According to the ruling, procedural rules governing the convening of the parliamentary session and the adoption of the act under review had been violated.

The court also ruled that the effects of its decision will enter into force 30 days after publication in the Official Gazette, giving parliament time to reorganise the committees in line with the procedural standards set out in the judgment.

Parliament had approved at the start of the current legislature an increase in the number of parliamentary committees from eight to 11.

Opposition lawmakers had argued that the procedure followed by the ruling majority was irregular.

TIRANA, April 14 /ATA/ The Special Appellate College overturned today the decision of the Independent Qualification Commission, returning to his job Judge Fatri Islamaj, former head of the Tirana Court and former head of the Commission of Appointments in Judiciary.

The Special Appellate College held today the public court session of the case regarding the appeal of the subject of re-evaluation Fatri Islamaj against the decision of the Independent Qualification Commission.

The subject of re-evaluation Fatri Islamaj presented his stance regarding the opinion that the international observer of the International Monitoring Operation had filed in the Special Appellate Panel to review the case.

The trial panel composed of presiding judge Sokol Çomo, rapporteur Natasha Mulaj and members Albana Shtylla, Ina Rama and Rezarta Schuetz, decided to overturn the Independent Qualification Commission decision, arguing that it is unfair and Judge Fatri Islamaj returns to his job.

The Independent Qualification Commission decided on 10.12.2019 to dismiss from office the subject of re-evaluation Fatri Islamaj, a judge in the Court of Appeals in Tirana arguing about problems with his wealth./p.s./
