According to the Democratic Party MP, this legislative proposal comes after the government’s failure to meet the demands of this important category of workers.

“For years on end, miners have been deceived by the government, which has promised real pension raise, but in fact, nothing has changed for them. The government has done nothing more than a formal indexation of pensions, which does not improve their living conditions,” Tabaku said in a media statement.

The opposition deputy states that there are over 1,000 miners who are pension beneficiaries, while more than 13,000 others benefit from the status of miner.

Tabaku and the opposition deputies have emphasized that this law aims for a fair and deserved increase in miners’ pensions, raising the bar for this category of workers.

“The time has come for us in parliament to follow through with a promise they never had the courage to deliver on, while budget funds are funnelled into corrupt concession and PPP schemes. Miners deserve more than an extra 20 lek a day or empty electoral promises. This law is a step towards meeting their demands and restoring their lost dignity,” Tabaku added.
