The Albanian National Olympic Committee said on Wednesday the opening phase features county-level matches in volleyball and basketball, organised across two education cycles: nine-year compulsory schools and upper secondary schools.

Participating teams are competing to secure representation for their respective counties in the second phase, the regional championship.

In total, 608 teams are involved in this year’s edition. At the nine-year school level, 158 basketball teams are competing – 78 girls’ teams and 80 boys’ teams – while 226 teams are taking part in volleyball, including 114 girls’ and 112 boys’ teams.

At upper secondary level, 73 basketball teams are competing, comprising 36 girls’ and 37 boys’ teams. In volleyball, 151 teams are participating, including 77 girls’ and 74 boys’ teams.

Organisers say the initiative aims to strengthen sports culture in schools, promote gender equality in athletics and serve as a platform to identify and develop young talent in the respective disciplines.
