The Minister of Health and Social Protection Ogerta Manastirliu congratulated the team of surgeons for the successful operation, namely Arsen Seferi, Ridvan Alimehmeti, Elvis Dervishi, Ejona Lilamani, Mithat Demneri, and Kliti Pilika.

The neurosurgeon Arsen Seferi said that the surgery was performed on a 40-year-old patient with a pathology in an extremely difficult or delicate region of the brain.

“Of course, such a delicate, extremely difficult and very rare surgical procedure cannot be performed without the technology support. Our operating theatre is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies. Surgical intervention in certain brain regions is often associated with irrecoverable paralysis. We have removed a tumour in a very delicate area and such a procedure, even to this day, cannot be even performed in leading international hospitals,” he said.

The government head noted that the delicate brain surgery on the aware patient is a rare procedure performed in the best hospitals in Europe, but the rare procedure has been also successfully performed by the neurosurgery team at Mother Teresa University Hospital Centre, saving the life of a 24-year-old man.

PM Rama expressed gratitude to surgeons and medical personnel that are clearly proving that the country’s health care system has been transformed over the past few years, yet a lot remain to be done in this system.

Doctors detected the tumor in the brain of the young man few years ago, but they decided to perform the procedure only recently.

As the tumor kept growing, surgeons were forced to perform a procedure called “awake craniotomy,” which is much like standard brain surgery, with one critical difference as the patient is awake.
