TIRANA, July 10 /ATA/ – Albanian President Ilir Meta has signed into law the act ratifying the protocols for Finland and Sweden to join NATO, the President’s office said on Sunday.

In the arguments accompanying the presidential decree, President Meta underlined that “the Republic of Albania has prioritized the national legal procedures on NATO membership of the Republic of Finland and the Kingdom of Sweden.”

According to him, “NATO membership of both friendly countries is definitely an historic development and huge strategic change supported by Albania in every step.”

The two Nordic countries applied for NATO membership on 18 May. The heads of state and government of NATO members officially invited the Finns and Swedes to join the alliance at the NATO summit in Madrid, with the accession protocols signed in Brussels on 5 July. All member states of the alliance must ratify the protocols in order for accession to go ahead.
