TIRANA, May 19 /ATA/ – ALS “Butrinti” is the second Albanian Navy’s patrol vessel to join the NATO-led Sea Guardian FOCOPS mission in patrolling in the Mediterranean, the Minister of Defence Niko Peleshi announced on Sunday.

Defence Minister said that after deploying ALS Lissus vessel, the Albanian Navy will boost its contribution to the NATO-led patrolling operation FOCOPS in the Mediterranean with the ALS “Butrinti” patrol ship.

“The Albanian crew will carry out special assignments under the Allied Maritime Command aimed at maintaining maritime situational awareness, deter illegal activities,” Peleshi said.

ALS “Lissus” and a crew of the Albanian Navy joined the Sea Guardian FOCOPS patrolling operations in the Mediterranean last March.

Participation in NATO-led missions is a clear indicator of Albania’s role as a factor of stability and security in the region and beyond.

Unlike the patrolling mission of humanitarian nature in the Aegean between 2016 and 2019, this is the second time when the Albanian Navy takes part in maritime security operations.
