TIRANA, June 25/ATA/ In the context of summer heat, the National Environment Agency made an appeal for the protection of medicinal forest plants, such as the Spanish broom threatened by fire.

‘Spartium junceum’ known as the Spanish broom, rush broom or weaver’s broom is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae.

The Spanish broom is a vigorous, deciduous shrub growing to 2–4 m tall, rarely 5 m, with main stems up to 5 cm thick, rarely 10 cm . The leaves fall away early. In late spring and summer shoots are covered in profuse fragrant yellow pea-like flowers 1 to 2 cm across. In late summer, the legumes mature black and reach 8–10 cm long. They burst open, often with an audible crack, spreading seed from the parent plant.

The plant is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and in landscape plantings. It is one of the most common plants, often seen growing throughout Albania, on dry slopes and in pastures of the maquis area, mainly along roadsides, reaching an altitude of 1000 m, creating beautiful landscapes. The plant is also known as a high value medicinal plant.

The tea prepared with its leaves has curative properties and it can flushes out toxins in body system, removes anxiety, fights insomnia, helps kidneys function properly, heals wounds in body, relieves sciatica pain.etc.

The plant is also used as a flavoring, and for its essential oil, known as genet absolute. Its fibers have been used for cloth and it produces a yellow dye.
