TIRANA, Feb 17 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Saturday that he expects Albania’s European Union membership bid to run separately from that of the neighbouring North Macedonia.

In his remarks at the panel discussion on the Western Balkans, common perspective and future of global security amid challenging times as part of the Munich Security Conference, the government head recalled that Albania’s EU accession process was linked to that of North Macedonia and the two were blocked by EU member, Bulgaria.

“I hope that Albania and North Macedonia are no longer a ‘pair’ on the EU integration path. Albania’s accession was bundled with North Macedonia, when the latter was blocked by Bulgaria in an anti-European action committed by a EU member, inciting unnecessary nationalistic views,” PM Rama said.

“Both countries have already held the intergovernmental conferences and the so-called screening process, but we are no longer a couple. So, we are no longer together. The fact is that the situation in North Macedonia is caused by the EU, which is incapable of putting an end to the practice of ‘hijacking’ the countries. This means that EU still allows member countries to use their place around the EU table as leverage against the neighbouring countries. This is the most anti-European possible thing,” he stated.

PM Rama underlined that the consequences are felt in the candidate countries in the region.

“This is the flame that kindles most nationalism at a time when we have left nationalism behind and we are seeking to move forward,” PM Rama concluded.
