TIRANA, July 29 /ATA/ The Nikaj-Mërtur region is emerging as one of the Albanian Alps’ key destinations for mountain tourism, famed for its pristine landscapes and strong tourism potential.

Prime Minister Edi Rama on Wednesday shared images of the region on social media, describing Nikaj-Mërtur as one of the Albanian Alps’ most treasured natural areas, where pristine scenery and traditional hospitality offer visitors a distinctive tourism experience.

In his post, Rama highlighted the importance of the ALPS project, supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, which brought together guesthouse operators, hotel owners and tour guides to discuss the challenges and opportunities for developing mountain tourism.

Rama said engagement with local stakeholders was a key element in building a sustainable development model aimed at promoting Nikaj-Mërtur’s natural and cultural heritage, while strengthening the local economy and expanding the region’s tourism offering.

Rama said unlocking the destination’s significant tourism potential through cooperation with local communities was key to establishing Nikaj-Mërtur as one of Albania’s up-and-coming mountain tourism destinations.

Nikaj-Mërtur is a historic region in northeastern Albania, within Tropojë county. Administratively, most of the region falls under the municipality of Lekbibaj, while the village of Rajë is part of the municipality of Fierzë. It borders Bujan to the east, Theth to the north, Shalë and Shosh to the west, and Tropojë to the south.
