TIRANA, Feb 27 /ATA/ – Albanian authorities have denied reports suggesting that 10 metric tons of pesticide-tainted tangerines, previously rejected by Croatia, were secretly dumped on local market in Albania instead of being destroyed.

Ermira Gjeçi, chief of staff at Albania’s Ministry of Agriculture, announced Thursday that the pesticide-tainted tangerines were buried and were not sent to the market for consumption.

According to her, the case has been reported by the Ministry of Agriculture itself.

In a media interview, Gjeçi said that “on December 10, 2024, Croatian authorities have seized a quantity of export-bound tangerines, after suspicions over the use of banned pesticides.”

She rejected media reports alleging that the pesticide-tainted tangerines were dumped on the market instead of being destroyed.

“The quantity of the tangerines was returned back to the farmer instead of being officially destroyed. The farmer has buried the tangerines without notifying the relevant authorities,” Gjeçi said, adding that the case has been referred to the prosecution office by the Ministry of Agriculture itself, since the disposal procedure requires ministry oversight.

The Agriculture Ministry has launched a task force to strengthen oversight on domestic and imported produce.

“This team will track products, ensure compliance, and enforce corrective measures as required by law,” Gjeçi said.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture has earlier announced that only four out of 923 shipments of Albanian tangerines have been found to contain banned pesticides.

TIRANA, Jan 6 /ATA/ – Many things in the methodology of doing business changed for Nesti Bello, entrepreneur and owner of a winery in Sukth, Durres, thanks to a support program by the Ministry of Agriculture and UNDP Albania office.

Bello says that he found it tough to run his business, conduct bookkeeping and deal with customers because of the daily work routine.

But the consultations he is receiving on the methodology of the production chain have encouraged him to make changes and better manage his enterprise.

His winery, founded in 1994, is located in the village of Perlat, Sukth, an agritourist area. After several years of work in neighboring Italy, Nesti Bello succeeded in building this winery that blends his working experience in Italy and the recent scientific innovations. This winery boasts production of organic wine, without preservatives, antioxidants and chemicals.

Bello winery and five more businesses, which provide supplies and various services to larger leading companies, have joined the Supplier’s Development Programme, part of the Economic Recovery and Resilience Programme that is funded by the Government of the United Kingdom and the Government of the Netherlands and is implemented by UNDP.

The program aims to develop the capacities of national suppliers, with the ultimate goal of boosting exports and increasing employment.
