Demo said he had immediately instructed the relevant State Police structures to look into the incidents and take appropriate measures.

“I thank the director general of the State Police for suspending the two officers in question,” the minister said.

He said police had faced a difficult situation over the past three days, accusing protest organisers of inciting violence against officers, public institutions, businesses and private property.

Demo stressed that he had repeatedly instructed police to respond to violent incidents proportionately and in accordance with the law.

“The law will apply equally to everyone, both those who, politically motivated, resort to violence with the aim of creating chaos in Albania and officers who exceed their legal powers,” he said.

Any violations by police officers would be addressed in accordance with the law, he added, saying the force’s professionalism was measured both by its ability to maintain public order and security and by its respect for the law and citizens’ dignity.

In a video message, Demo also appealed to parents whose underage children had taken part in violent acts to speak with them and prevent their involvement in such incidents.

“I particularly want to appeal to the parents of minors who take part in violent acts. Talk to your children. Do not allow them to be used by destructive political forces or to grow up believing that violence is the way to achieve their goals,” he said.

Demo assured the public that state institutions would continue to maintain public order and security, adding that the rule of law would prevail.
