TIRANA, June 16 /ATA/ President of the Republic Ilir Meta said on Thursday that “the conflict in Ukraine and recent developments show how wise and visionary the investment in TAP has been.”

Meta attended on Thursday the Global Forum in Baku, where he expressed gratitude for the support provided by Azerbaijan, as well as by President Aliyev in successful construction and implementation of the TAP pipeline.
According to him, “the importance of this project is multiplied as an alternative source of energy for the region and the whole of Europe.”

“The war in Ukraine has shaken up the whole world in terms of stability, changing in particular the European and NATO security environment. This conflict reminded everyone that freedom and sovereignty should not be taken for granted! It was a reminder that our countries should not wait for crises to occur in order to respond, but should take precautionary measures by increasing the defense budget, preparing in advance and anticipating every possible scenario and response to challenges.”

The war in Ukraine produced the opposite effect of what Russia expected. It did not divide our nations, but united them,” said the President.

According to him, “the response was a global coalition, in support of the peace-loving people and democratic institutions of Ukraine.”

“This new geopolitical landscape requires a new approach of the EU and NATO for enlargement and collective security. Enlargement should be regarded as a powerful geostrategic instrument. Today, about 600 million Europeans live in NATO countries, with the alliance protecting about 93% of the European Union population. The conflict in Ukraine has highlighted the urgency of membership for countries aspiring to join NATO and the European Union. These actions would prevent the third parties from holding sway in some vulnerable regions,” he added.

“The idea of a free and peaceful Europe cannot be complete without the integration of the Western Balkan countries, which are key partners and integral members of our common European family. Recognition of the Republic of Kosovo by all UN member states, as well as visa liberalization for the citizens of Kosovo, would greatly contribute to peace and stability in our region,” he added.
