TIRANA, Dec 9 /ATA/ On the eve of International Human Rights Day, Parliament Speaker, Elisa Spiropali, held a meeting on Monday at the Parliament Presidency seat with the leaders of religious communities.

The meeting was attended by Bujar Spahiu, Chairman of the Muslim Community, Haxhi Dede Edmond Brahimaj, the World Bektashi head, Monsignor Arjan Dodaj, Archbishop Metropolitan of Tirana and Durrës, His Eminence Asti, Metropolitan of Berat, and Ergest Biti, Chairman of the Evangelical Fraternity.

“We discussed strengthening social infrastructure for a better, more humane, and just society; how religious tolerance should also serve as a model for political conduct, opposing the language of denigration, and hate speech, which are unacceptable in Parliament and in our lives; cooperation in the fight against violence in society and within families; and how to make sure that the cooperation between the Assembly and religious institutions is revolved around the individual and the citizen,” said Spiropali as she shared highlights from the meeting.

In the meeting, Spiropali highlighted that, “on International Human Rights Day, it is crucial to focus not only on freedom of belief, a right guaranteed in Albania, but also on the role of religious communities in safeguarding other fundamental rights of citizens and contributing to a better, more humane, and just society.”

“Religious diversity is one of the most valuable assets of Albania. Understanding and religious harmony are an important reference for the country, which is now globally recognized as a common home to different faiths and religious communities, serving as an example for other countries. Religious understanding and tolerance also serve as a factor for social cohesion in society. However, they should also be a factor for political cohesion and a model from which Albanian politicians and parliamentarians should learn. The use of violence and hate speech is intolerable in our society.,” said Spiropali.

“Collaboration between the Parliament and religious institutions and communities should focus on strengthening the social infrastructure of society, empowering families, improving family relationships, providing social, humanitarian, educational, cultural, and other services, combating violence in society and within families, supporting families and citizens in need, and more. This cooperation should center around the family, the individual, and the citizen,” emphasized Spiropali.
