TIRANA, March 2 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama stated at the Q&A session of Parliament on Thursday that no formal indictment has been filed against him in the United States of America regarding the so-called McGonigal affair.

In his remarks about the motion debate forwarded by the opposition after the charges brought against justice the former special FBI agent Charles McGonigal in the U.S., PM Rama accused the opposition of efforts to politically take advantage of a court case in the U.S. that has nothing to do with Albanian government.

“For weeks now, the opposition is trying to politically use a court case in the United States that has nothing to do with Albania, the government of Albania and for me personally,” PM Rama stated.

“What really happened is: A senior FBI official, namely the former head of counterintelligence in our region, with the indictment noting that he has visited Albania and has met with me. The indictment also notes that he failed to disclose travels or meetings in the region and has borrowed money from an Albanian-American citizen, the so-called person A. The indictment also includes the U.S. investigation into Russian money for the Democratic Party, noting that person A has received a material on this case from my office. The indictment also refers to another person B, who used to serve as my informal advisor for several consecutive years and a friend of the defendant. Nobody else except the former senior FBI official Charles McGonigal stand accused in this case. These are the facts as presented in the indictment forwarded to the court in the United States of America,” he said.

“But despite a long investigation, which I only found out about when it made the media headlines, more precisely when they were asked by an American journalist from Insider, if I’m not mistaken, the indictment contains not a single charge and not even other piece of information in addition to correctly and repeatedly reporting my meetings with the senior American official, but also the true fact that he has talked with me about the Russian threat,” he said.

TIRANA, March 2 /ATA/ – The Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party Luçiano Boçi presented a debate motion with the Prime Minister Edi Rama as parliament is holding a questions and answers session regarding the U.S. indictment of former CIA agent Charles McGonigal.

In his remarks, DP lawmaker Boçi said that the opposition has demanded that the government head provide answers regarding “the public and legal charges against him in the United States of America.”

“As for the political accusations here in Albania, PM Rama should have already resigned, because he turned the Prime Minister’s office into a corruption saloon, where he keeps the citizens’ wealth for his personal and political benefits,” Boçi said.

According to him, “PM Rama’s goal was to attack and ultimately eliminate opposition and political system in Albania.”

“This is not a political trial, but it is just the beginning of the dramatic end of a Prime Minister, who projected and undertook actions to eliminate opposition and political system in Albania, as well as violate the absolute reputation of the U.S. security,” Boçi stated.
