TIRANA, April 24 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha on Friday announced that the opposition will hold its next protest on May 8, calling on citizens to gather in Tirana for what he described as a “peaceful uprising.”

Berisha said Albanians would assemble in the streets and squares of the capital in what he called “the strongest peaceful uprising the country has ever seen” against what he described as the “head of a criminal organization and his regime.”

In a public statement, Berisha accused the ruling majority of obstructing justice and shielding officials allegedly involved in corruption cases.

“The only hope in this dramatic situation is a strong civic reaction. The country is being destroyed day by day. Albanians are leaving every day. Everything becomes hopeless unless we rise strongly with our voice,” he said.

Berisha called for May 8 to be a day of national unity, urging citizens to set aside disagreements and grievances to join a mass protest against the government.

He said the “peaceful uprising” is intended to unite Albanians regardless of age or political affiliation, arguing that alleged government corruption is undermining public finances and the country’s future.

“May 8 must be the day of the Albanians, of their strongest protest. I am confident that on May 8 we will send the strongest message to this regime,” Berisha added.
