Dozens of firefighters from several municipalities, police and local authorities, volunteers, Armed Forces personnel, firefighting vehicles and two helicopters are working to monitor four fire hotspots across the pine forest area of Mallakastër.

The Director of the National Civil Protection Agency, Haki Çako, told the media today that “the situation is under control at the moment. Aerial operations are also being carried out with two helicopters from the Air Force of the Armed Forces.”

Çako said that “we are coordinating the operation alongside all relevant structures and the situation will continue to be monitored until the fire is fully brought under control.”

Mallakastër Mayor Qerim Ismailaj said that, “within the expanded fire perimeter, teams are currently working to tackle two main hotspots — one located between the villages of Panahor and Sfirë, and the other on the border with the Patos area, where operations are also underway.”

Authorities said there is currently no risk to homes in Mallakastër, where firefighting efforts continue after a blaze spread from Riban to Ngraçan, fuelled by winds and burning large areas of pine forest.
