TIRANA, Sept 30 /ATA/ – Albania’s main opposition Democratic Party (DP) has called for a parliamentary debate on the government’s four-year programme, but the ruling Socialist Party (SP) rejected the motion, arguing it violates parliamentary rules.

The motion, submitted by the chairman of DP parliamentary group, Gazment Bardhi, seeks to reopen discussion on the government’s policy agenda, which was approved in a 25-minute session on September 18. Bardhi requested that the debate take place this Thursday, noting no other session had been scheduled.

The head of SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, countered that the motion failed to meet the formal and substantive criteria set out in Article 98 of the parliamentary rulebook, saying it grouped together six broad topics instead of focusing on a single issue.

“This request covers macro-issues such as ministerial integrity and political criminalisation. It fails to respect the required format for a motion,” Balla said, adding that the matter was already considered closed two weeks after the programme’s approval.

Bardhi responded that the Conference of Chairpersons – the body tasked with scheduling debates—should not evaluate the content of motions, but only set dates. He insisted the motion centers on Albania’s EU integration aspirations, a key government priority.

Separately, Parliament is expected to formally establish five of its 11 standing committees later today, following an agreement between the majority and the opposition last week.

TIRANA, May 7 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama has voiced confidence that his ruling Socialist Party (SP) will secure a solid majority in the May 11 parliamentary elections and will push for Albania’s European Union membership.

Addressing a campaign rally in the southern Albanian city of Fier on Wednesday afternoon, the government head stated that Albania should not miss the train of history and the opportunity to join the European Union.

He said that with the May 11 vote, Albania should send a strong message to wrap up the EU accession negotiations within 2027 and tell Europe that Albanians want the country’s EU membership more than any political party and over any political conflict and divisions.

“This time we have no other option but to create the largest majority ever to give Albania the power to negotiate the agreement with Europe and to send a very clear message to the leaders of Europe, who will come together in Tirana on May 16: We the Albanian people with one firm voice want to be part of the united European family and we want it now,” PM Rama said .

TIRANA, May 5/ATA/ Prime Minister, at the same time leader of the Socialist Party Edi Rama, held an election rally in Korça today.

Rama said that, “The sight of this large human body united here in this square looks very fantastic”.

Further on, PM Rama said that he is not looking just for a victory, but vote of an overwhelming spiritual majority of the people for an Albania as the European country of the Balkans.

“It will not be a vote just for an arithmetic ruling majority, so that to create a Socialist government. I feel certain about that and I do no say it because of arrogance or self-confidence. But, it is a question of creating a spiritual majority, Albanian, for Albania as the Europe of the Balkans and for Albanians as inhabitants of a united Europe”.

Hence, the prime minister highlighted the significance of May 11 vote.

“It is not a vote that we will simply go and elect the new Parliament and divide who is the majority, who is the minority. It is a vote that also contains a historic decision; it carries the decision that Albanians will make together at a historic moment because for the first time, since the isolation wall fell, Europe has opened its door to us and we are on the threshold ready to cross it.”

“For the first time! That door has never been open. That house, the EU, is a house of the rich; it does not keep the door open. The houses of the rich do not always keep the door open. The houses of the poor do, they always have open doors. For them to open the door, 27 members within that house must agree that the door should open and you can knock as much as you want, the door will not open if they do not have their own interest in opening it”, said Rama.

“And in the course of all these years we had to make an extraordinary effort so that first of all they see us, recognize us, get to know us and understand us and then accept us as Europeans with our European identity. To accept us and then after accepting us to respect us. And after respecting us to value us. And after valuing us to trust us. And we have achieved this. We have worked hard for this”, said Rama. /r.e/a.f/p.s./

TIRANA, Dec 15 /ATA/ – Democratic Party lawmaker Jorida Tabaku on Sunday accused the ruling majority of ignoring Constitutional Court decisions and exacerbating the economic crisis in the country.

In a video-message on the social media, the opposition MP Tabaku claimed that the Socialist Party’s failure to enforce Constitutional Court decisions is a clear example showing how the ruling majority violates the principle of equality before the law demonstrates a lack of accountability.

In her social media post, Tabaku argues that the ruling majority was applying double standards in its approach to justice, saying selective justice undermines constitutional order and worsens living conditions for Albanian families.

Tabaku claimed that the Socialist majority’s actions reflect a disregard for legal obligations and public welfare, further eroding trust in Albania’s institutions.

She stated that laws passed by the majority serve narrow interests, leading to higher prices and economic instability.

“This is a government that operates with double standards, harming citizens and ignoring its duty to apply the law fairly,” she said.

TIRANA, March 16 /ATA/ – The chairman of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha denounced an accord between the ruling Socialist Party and the Democratic Party’s Refoundation faction to end disruption of parliament, saying the agreement was a “shrewdly conducted exchange.”

The Socialist parliamentary majority and the opposition Refoundation Democratic Party struck a deal this week to establish two parliamentary investigative committees and end parliament disruption.

DP chairman addressed the electoral assembly of his party with supporters in Tirana, saying the deal was “a shameful horse-trading to provide both sides with advantages.

“It is an embarrassing shrewd bargaining announced in the last 48 hours, which has actually been a pressure cooker from the beginning. This is because this type of people know each other’s language and they are ready to bargain with each other in best interest of each other, but not in Albanians interest,” Basha said in his remarks.

According to him, the latest deal is clearly reached primarily to advance interests of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
