TIRANA, May 20 /ATA/ – By I. Vata/ The Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime sentenced on Thursday to 2 years in prison and 5 years’ expulsion from public office, former Prosecutor General Adriatik Llalla, who is the highest ranking Albanian official ever convicted by a court in the country.

The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime has accepted the claim of the SPAK by closing the case on the first instance.
Through his defence lawyer, Llalla sought to be acquitted of the charge. According to lawyer Sokol Hazizaj, the case against Llalla is prejudiced and biased. According to his declaration in court, the process is fabricated, adding that all immovable properties were purchased by Llalla through notarial contracts and all his financial expenses were made through banking.

SPAK had requested two years in prison and 5 years’ expulsion from public office for Adriatik Llalla. The immovable properties in possession of the former chief prosecutor, almost 22 thousand square meters of site and an apartment in Durrës, are transferred to the state.

Former Chief Prosecutor Llalla is charged with “Refusal to declare, non-declaration, concealment or non-declaration of assets, private interests of elected persons and public servants, or any other person who is legally bound to declare” in three cases.
Adriatik Llalla was also investigated for money laundering, but after the case was closed out, he was sent to trial only for hiding his wealth.

Adriatik Llalla was appointed Prosecutor General in 2012 and held this post until November 2017, when his 5-year term expired to be replaced by the Short-Term Prosecutor General, Arta Marku. The investigation against Llalla was initially launched by the Durrës Prosecutor’s Office on March 15, 2018 on charges of hiding assets, abuse of office and money laundering. He was also investigated for the criminal offense of “non-declaration of monetary amounts at the border.”
