TIRANA, June 18 /ATA/ A technical meeting with a special focus on managing the disease Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) was held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The event featured Associate Professor George Valiakos, an expert in microbiology and a key figure in the eradication of this disease in Greece.
Professor Valiakos provided an in-depth overview of the Greek experience in the control and eradication of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), delivering a comprehensive analysis of the measures undertaken and the results attained in regions previously affected by outbreaks. He presented his insights in his capacity as a specialist-supervisor appointed by the Greek Ministry of Agriculture to oversee the management of the PPR situation within Greece.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MBZHR) reported that the meeting underlined the importance of strengthening inter-institutional cooperation and examined the current situation in the country, as well as the measures for effective disease management. The participants exchanged concrete experiences, shared insights, and established the groundwork for enhancing PPR control strategies in Albania.

The first confirmed case of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in our country was documented on June 4, 2025, in the village of Domen, within the Postribë administrative unit of Shkodër Municipality. Subsequently, further cases were detected in several administrative units across the municipalities of Dibër, Bulqizë, Skrapar, Devoll, and Tirana.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development calls on all farmers to rigorously implement biosecurity measures on their farms and to avoid any movement of animals outside their farm, adhering to the existing regulations and cooperating for the common good: the livestock economy of the country.
