TIRANA, Dec 9 /ATA/ The Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, has submitted a legislative initiative to the Parliament aimed at officially recognizing the unpaid work of mothers who provide full-time care for children with autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, or other disabilities that hinder their independence.

In a public statement, Tabaku shared that over the past year, she has met with numerous “exceptional” families who are committed to providing security, education, and stability for their children. She highlighted that many mothers have quit their jobs and careers to dedicate themselves fully, 24 hours a day, to children with special needs.

“This is work that goes unpaid. It is a sacrifice, a responsibility, and an act of love. However, it also represents a European and human right that the state must acknowledge,” highlighted Tabaku.

She further explained that the purpose of the legislative initiative is to officially recognize the commitment of mothers as a valuable contribution, allowing them to receive direct financial support from the state budget. Tabaku argued that the financial impact on the budget would be negligible and entirely affordable, especially when compared to other public projects that offer little to no social benefit.
“This is neither a concession, nor a public-private partnership, nor an extraordinary cost. It is a modest, yet essential form of support for thousands of families facing economic hardship,” stressed the MP.

Tabaku urged civil society organizations, professionals, and families to get involved in the process by providing feedback to enhance the initiative and ensure that the voices of those most in need are heard.

“It is time to set a humane standard for these families and exceptional mothers, who contribute far more to society than they receive,” Tabaku concluded, expressing her belief that Parliament will approach this issue with the seriousness and responsibility it deserves.
