TIRANA, April 13 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama stated Tuesday that the ruling Socialist majority has delivered on its pledge to speed up the legalization process of illegal buildings across the country, saying as many as 210,000 dwellings have been already legalized since the Socialists took office compared to only 21,000 informal buildings legalized by the previous centre-right government.

The government head also said that a growing number of quake-affected families are constantly moving into their newly-built homes as the reconstruction programme launched in the wake of the devastating earthquake on November 26, 2019 is moving in full steam ahead.

At a meeting with local residents in Tirana’s administrative unit No. 1, the Socialist leader acknowledged that the legalization process has yet to complete.

“I am pretty aware that the legalization process has yet to complete and it has entered now its most complex phase in legal and technical terms, but one should not forget that only 21,000 buildings were legalized when we took office, while as many as 210,000 homes are now legalized,” PM Rama said.

“The families that lost their homes in few seconds due to the devastating earthquake are increasingly moving into their new dwellings and I understand their impatience as they have been waiting for months. However, I am proud that if we were to look at the practice and experience of other countries, much more developed and more powerful than our country, I can say we have moved ahead swiftly and progress is constantly being made,” he said.

The government head also said that government has worked around the clock during all these tough months of the pandemic.

“The light in end of the tunnel keeps becoming stronger and, quite different from other neighbouring countries, we are pressing ahead with the mass vaccination campaign that is bringing back smile to our grandparents and parents,” he said.
