TIRANA, Oct 16 /ATA/ Democratic Party chairman Sali Berisha said today that Prime Minister Edi Rama was pushing the country towards large-scale conflict. Speaking to the media, Berisha said the student protests were spreading to other cities across Albania.

He claimed that police had detained more than 150 people, including citizens who had no involvement in any specific illegal act.
Berisha also accused the government of having “sent police officers in police vehicles last night to smash windows, terrorise female students in their dormitories and spray them, acts typical of gang dictatorships”.

“This is how Prime Minister Edi Rama is leading the country towards widespread conflict,” he said.
The DP leader said protesters with injuries to the head and other parts of the body were being treated in hospitals across the country. He also referred to footage which, he claimed, showed students being subjected to violence.
In his address, Berisha called on citizens to “support this historic movement with all their resources. Small businesses should show solidarity with the protest; this revolt must be made universal”.

“The Democratic Party calls on all citizens to give their full support to this historic movement, this historic uprising by students in Tirana and universities across the country, a historic movement offering hope for a better future for young people in schools and beyond,” the DP leader said.
“The DP urges small businesses that consider this party their own to find ways to show their full solidarity with the protesting students. The party assures them that the students bear no ill will towards them. I call on all public services to consider standing in solidarity with the students. It is vital that this strike and revolt expand and gain support across society,” Berisha said.

He also said that the Democratic Party had arranged free legal assistance for everyone detained.
“Our MPs have been present around the clock at all police stations, and they will continue to stand by and support the students,” Berisha said.
