TIRANA, April 9 /ATA/ – The chairman of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group Taulant Balla said on Thursday the opposition had not supported any legislation linked to Albania’s EU integration process passed during the current legislature.

Addressing a regular parliament session, Balla told lawmakers that 23 laws aligning Albania’s legislation with European Union standards had been approved since late September 2025.

“Since the start of this legislature, we have passed 23 laws in fulfilment of Albania’s EU accession obligations. Not a single one has received your vote,” Balla said, addressing Democratic Party lawmaker Jorida Tabaku during a parliamentary debate.

Balla said the measures were part of Albania’s commitments under the EU accession process and argued that the opposition had effectively excluded itself by refusing to support them.

“These are not our laws, but Albania’s obligations in the framework of EU membership. The reality, for Brussels and the public, is that you have not voted in favour of any of them,” he said.

He added that the opposition was free to propose its own amendments but rejected what he described as attempts to impose conditions on the ruling majority.

Balla also proposed holding a parliamentary debate on EU-related issues on May 14, marking Europe Week.

TIRANA, January 16/ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama, at the same time leader of the Socialist Party, spoke at the opening of the new Parliamentary year of the Parliamentary group on the approval of laws related to EU membership.

In his speech, Rama said that, “There have several cases where naturally the process of discussions and approval of laws related to EU membership has been delayed or considered as sitting loose on a process where we have the freedom to intervene according to our opinions”.

We, said Rama, do not have this liberty; this should be crystal clear.

“We have the liberty to negotiate with the European Union, but we do not have the liberty to discuss after we negotiate. This means that negotiations on a draft that enters the entire broad and complex mechanism of the architecture of European law is negotiated with the commission, imposed on the government and comes to the Parliament”, Rama underlined.

The head of government stated that, “The moment it comes to the Parliament, it should be approved, not discussed, because in order to enter into the discussion of such a law, we must first discuss whether we want to join the EU or not.”

Rama also mentioned another example of, “Some colleagues who take a draft that comes from the government, after it has been agreed with the Commission through the negotiating team and start referring to other EU countries. Look, France doesn’t have it like that; Germany doesn’t have it like that, and even Croatia doesn’t have it like that, and why should we do it like that? The answer is very simple: To do it like France, you have to be France. You are Albania, we did not ask for you to come and become part of our family; it is you who asked and we are very happy to have you part of the family, but we have conditions for you and these are the conditions; if you don’t want it, you can do it as you want”, said Rama.

Now, Rama explained, this does not only happen with Albania, the entire membership process is one that has brought about aggravation of the conditions for what followed later on.

“Those who initially entered the EU from the former communist empire of the East had a much easier process and became members with much fewer conditions. They were, to put it another way, much more unprepared than we are today”, said Rama.

PM Rama said that, “Then came those who had more conditions than those before. Then came those others who had more conditions than before. Finally, there came Croatia who had more conditions than all the others. Now, there are the countries of the Western Balkans who have conditions that not even Croatia could have imagined”. /k.s/j.p/p.s./
