TIRANA, Aug 19 /ATA/ The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has officially launched the public consultation for the draft law “On Official Controls,” an important initiative aimed at strengthening food safety and protecting public health in Albania.

The purpose of the law is to ensure high safety standards throughout the entire food chain, from production to consumption, including products of animal origin, plants, GMOs, and animal feed.

The law introduces innovations in control protocols: risk assessment-based control rather than assumption-based; unannounced inspections to reflect on-the-ground reality; detailed procedures for slaughtering, inspection, and veterinary supervision; specific rules for GMOs and their labelling.

The draft law provides for fees for official controls and fines ranging from 100,000 to 2,000,000 lek for serious violations, such as activities in unregistered or unsupervised units.

The public consultation will remain open until September 16, 2025, allowing citizens, experts, and stakeholders to provide input to enhance legislation and ensure safer food for every Albanian household.
