TIRANA, Oct 2 /ATA/ The landfill in Gërhot of Gjirokastra, an apocalyptic- looking dump site very close to the city until yesterday, has been transformed beyond recognition thanks to the government investment.

Prime Minister Edi Rama posted Sunday on social media the images of this landfill, one of the environmental hotspots, which has been completely transformed.

The work on the rehabilitation of this landfill was completed in June of this year.

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment in partnership with the municipalities and partners such as the German, Swiss and Swedish governments, managed to phase out about 15 hotspots in one year.

The open dump sites in Përmet, illegal landfill sites in Burrel, Kukës, Krujë, Skrapar, Këlcyre, Laç, Cërrik, Fier and Lushnje, Dimal, Kuçovo and Berat were phased out and rehabilitated.
Currently, 90% of the waste in the territory is collected as compared to 50% that was collected in 2013.
