TIRANA, Feb 9 /ATA/ During its Monday session, the Parliamentary Committee on Europe and Foreign Affairs examined the draft law ‘On the Necessity of Conducting Laboratory Analyses for Food Contaminants,’ which was submitted late last year by a group of Freedom Party deputies and presented for advisory review.
During the presentation of the draft law, Tedi Blushi, Chair of the Freedom Party Parliamentary Group, stated that the country faces an alarming food safety situation due to products contaminated with pesticides and prohibited substances, which pose risks to citizens and affect Albanian exports.
Food safety is not a luxury, but a fundamental right and a constitutional obligation. This draft law aims to protect consumers, rural communities, and Albanian farmers,’ Blushi stated, emphasizing the importance of strict control of food products and ensuring compliance with standards for exports to international markets.
The draft law proposed by the Freedom Party establishes the requirement for laboratory testing of chemical and biological contaminants in all food products as a measure to ensure compliance with European legislation and to prevent abuses that endanger public health.
Through this draft law, our primary objective is the protection of the public interest and the rights of Albanian citizens. This must be a national priority for all of us,’ Blushi stated.
The rapporteur for the draft law, MP Romina Kuko, noted that the initiative is not included in the 2024–2026 National Plan for European Integration, although, according to the accompanying report, it aims to align Albanian legislation with that of the European Union.
She clarified that the draft law comprises nine articles and seeks to identify gaps in food safety in Albania by establishing a clear and enforceable obligation to conduct laboratory analyses for chemical and biological contaminants in food products.
Kuko pointed out that the draft law has not been submitted for consultation on the Parliament’s public consultation platform and, as a result, does not meet the formal and substantive requirements for drafting a legal act.
Upon review, it appears that the draft law does not ensure concrete alignment with current European Union legislation and undermines legal certainty,’ she emphasized.
