TIRANA, April 2 /ATA/ Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Frida Krifca, in the monthly open debate on agricultural issues “Dialogue with the Minister” with lecturers of Tirana Agricultural University, addressed the topic of food safety and specifically the latest case of avian flu in poultry which has broken out in Europe and America.

Professors of veterinary medicine, zootechnicians, virologists, epidemiologists, addressed the case in relation to the measures taken, the lessons learned, but also giving scientific answers to the speculations in public on the effects of bird flu.

Minister Krifca stressed that notification from ISUV has triggered a prompt response, through the establishment of National Crisis Center and implementation of the Contingency Plan. Based on inspections across the country, there are no Infection hotbeds on poultry farms for the production of meat, eggs or mix.

“Behind these establishments and shops there is a very large chain of workers, an industry built through hard work and sacrifice, which is in great difficulty today. I wanted to open this discussion to shed more light on this issue,” she said.

Professor Kapllan Sula, appreciated the ministry’s timely response and called on all veterinarians to speak based on facts and strive against misinformation of the consumer.

Professor Xhelil Koleci, a member of the crisis management group, praised the timely response of the authorities and stressed that the H5N8 strain is not transmitted to humans.
Epidemiologist Kujtim Mersini, also a member of the crisis management group stressed that the consumer is not at risk.

“We must go about campaigns to appease public opinion through scientific facts so that trade is not affected, because the consumer is really not at risk,” he said.
