TIRANA, July 6 /ATA/ – The International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) has confirmed its funding of 3.2 million euros for the new food safety project in Albania, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Frida Krifca said on Wednesday.

During a visit to CIHEAM, a Mediterranean intergovernmental organization composed of 13 Member States, including Albania, the Agriculture and Rural Development Minister was assured of the CIHEAM funding aimed at improving food safety and standards of the locally-grown agricultural products in Albania.

The project will support the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in processing indigenous agricultural products to improve quality standards and food safety. The project is also designed to promote further development of the value chain for local producers and food safety.

Through the CIEHAM institute assistance, Albania became the first non-EU member to align its national legislation with the EU legislation on organic agriculture.

Albania has been a member of the CIHEAM since 1992, but the country’s exchanges with this institute date back to the 1960s. Several hundred Albanian students have been trained in the institutes. Over the past twenty years, nearly 400 professionals have received specialized training, including through partnerships with Albanian administrations and universities. In addition, the CIHEAM institute counts among their professors and researchers several internationally renowned Albanian experts particularly involved in projects with their country of origin.
