TIRANA, Oct 16 /ATA/ – Albania’s parliament on Thursday began debating a motion that seeks to formally recognize the 1998–1999 atrocities committed by Serbian forces in Kosovo as genocide, as well as to define the obligations of the Albanian government in relation to this recognition.

The motion, initiated by a group of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) lawmakers, is expected to conclude with a vote on a non-binding resolution later in the session.

During the debate, DP leader Sali Berisha accused Serbian forces of committing around 100 documented massacres during the Kosovo war, including the killing of approximately 1,400 children.

“To deny the Serbian genocide in Kosovo is to deny yourself as an Albanian, to deny the conscience of a nation,” Berisha said, citing figures from a resolution previously adopted by the Kosovo parliament.

Berisha also criticized those who, in his words, “disregard the victims and the suffering of the Kosovar people, saying such denial strips individuals of any sense of human, national, or social conscience.”

Following Berisha’s remarks, the Socialist parliamentary majority proposed a procedural vote to postpone the decision on the resolution until the end of the parliamentary session.
