PRISHTINA, Aug 20 /ATA/ – Lawmakers from Kosovo’s Democratic Party (PDK) gathered again outside the government building on Thursday, continuing an action launched in recent days. They were joined by lawmakers from the Alliance, as well as PDK municipal assembly members and directors from the municipality of Vushtrri.

The PDK-led action took place at the entrance to the government building, with lawmakers calling on acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti to go to parliament and allow the constitution of the legislature to proceed.

The PDK has been holding the protest outside the government building for several days, opposing Kurti’s continued caretaker mandate and calling for state institutions to become fully operational.

Kosovo’s parliament has still not completed its formal constitution, preventing the country from moving ahead with the formation of a new government.

The protest is the latest in several days of opposition action as pressure grows for a political breakthrough.

PRISHTINA, April 15 /ATA/ – Kosovo’s new parliament will hold its inaugural session on Tuesday, when the newly elected lawmakers will have to take the oath of Members of Parliament (MP) after the general elections in the country.

The session is expected to begin at 10 hrs with the agenda including creation of a temporary parliamentary committee to verify the quorum and the mandates of MPs, their swearing-in ceremony, election of the Assembly Speaker and deputy speakers.

However, the ruling Vetëvendosje party lacks the votes needed to elect a Speaker. Despite securing 48 seats and the support of seven non-Serb minority deputies, Vetëvendosje remains six votes short of the 61 required to begin formal proceedings. NISMA has ruled out a deal with the ruling party, while key opposition groups have declined to participate in the vote.

Today’s session will be chaired by the oldest MP, whereas Avni Dehari and Sala Jashari are the youngest elected lawmakers.

Without electing a speaker, the Assembly cannot be constituted and no new government can be formed.

The ruling Vetevendosja party won the parliamentary elections in February, securing 42.30% of the votes and 48 seats in the new parliament. The Democratic Party of Kosovo ranked second with 20.95% and 24 seats, the Democratic League of Kosovo ranked third with 18.27% and 20 seats, and the AAK-Nisma coalition secured 7.06% and 8 seats in the new parliament.
