TIRANA, Dec 19 /ATA/ – By Maela Marini/ The U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans, Alexander Kasanoff, stated on Thursday in Tirana that “in order to ensure the continued, uninterrupted fight of SPAK against corruption and organized crime, SPAK prosecutors should be permitted to reapply for service after their current term expires.”
At the event marking the 5th anniversary of SPAK, Kasanoff remarked, “Failure to allow this could disrupt the most successful initiative against crime and corruption in Albanian history, resulting in the loss of the most experienced professionals.”

He began by congratulating SPAK’s Chief Prosecutor, Altin Dumani, for being named a champion in the fight against corruption by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on December 9, International Anti-Corruption Day.

“While celebrating the 5th anniversary of SPAK, it is essential to pause and reflect on the progress of the Justice Reform in Albania. Your fellow Albanian citizens were and continue to be the driving force behind the Justice Reform in Albania. They demanded change, and the government listened. It took tremendous courage to embark on this journey, courage for political leaders to demonstrate the political will to amend the Constitution,” said Kasanoff.

Kasanoff praised SPAK’s achievements, adding that “the strong results so far reflect how seriously every inspector and prosecutor takes their responsibilities.”

“Your arrests, criminal proceedings, and exceptional convictions have ensured that those who were once untouchable are brought to justice. We have confidence that SPAK has just begun and will continue to inspire trust among the citizens of Albania, as well as among investors, that a safer future is possible,” he added.
In conclusion, Kasanoff reaffirmed the U.S. support for Albania in its fight against crime and corruption.
He stated, “Justice will prevail. No one is above the law. In addition to being accountable to the citizens, your actions must be accountable to justice. These processes, bringing justice forward, are crucial to building a strong justice system. Independent institutions must be effective. The independence of SPAK remains essential. SPAK is one of the most trusted institutions in Albania, but SPAK under Dumani cannot solve all of Albania’s problems. Other institutions must also show courage and dignity. The fight against corruption is everyone’s duty.”
