TIRANA, Oct 7 /ATA/ – Albania’s Supreme Court called an emergency meeting of all judges on Thursday at the High Judicial Council, following the killing of Appeals Court judge Astrit Kalaja on Monday.

In a press statement, the country’s top court emphasized the urgent need to strengthen security measures and uphold the integrity of the judiciary in a democratic society.

The Court said the session will address court security and judicial independence and it will serve as a moment of unity and reflection for the entire judiciary in defending three key principles.

“No act of violence will bend justice; no threat will deter judges from fulfilling their duties with integrity; and no political or public pressure will compromise judicial independence,” the Court said.

The Supreme Court underscored that Albania’s judges stand united, courageous, and determined in defending their lives and dignity, as well as citizens’ right to an impartial and independent judiciary.

“At this sensitive moment, the judiciary addresses the public with respect and confidence, reminding that justice is the strongest shield of citizens against injustice and violence,” the statement concluded.
